How can I pass up a blog title like that?! Anyways. I ventured down to DC for my first (in a series, I’m sure) of exploratory trips to our nation’s capital, which is only about 40 minutes away from here. Since I have off Tuesdays and Wednesdays I slept in a bit on Tuesday and headed out for DC. Trips to the various memorials were made in an attempt to get all of the usual touristy spots out of the way and then in an effort to take care of my sports appetite we attended the Dodgers v Nationals game at the brand new Nationals Park. I love to visit new ball parks and this one was awesome. Great atmosphere and design. Although its tough when your team (Astros) isn’t playing, it was good to see ManRam for the first time in a Dodgers uniform and with less hair. Overall the DC area is very confusing when it comes to travel and streets. There are tons of round abouts, closed street portions and sudden highway changes to get used to, but in the end we made it to everything we wanted to. There are a ton of places I still want to visit within the area, but Ill have plenty of time for that. We did manage to get free tickets for a tour of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing which is where paper money is made. That was awesome! We picked up an uncut sheet of bills to frame back at home. From there we went to the Newseum, which is a brand new museum that opened in April, devoted to news and journalism. This place was incredible. The overall design was amazing and the content was top-notch. Loads of interactive items and show stoppers such as a portion of the Berlin wall, an incredible 9-11 exhibit as well as my personal favorite, the Pulitzer prize photo gallery. I enjoyed seeing photos from my colleagues up in the gallery. There are movies and games and great food and big pictures and things to touch and see. Its a great educational experience. For non-journalists it offers a window into our world and for journalists its a great place to come and be proud of who we are and our role in the machine of modern democracy. More info on the Newseum here: http://newseum.org As far as these images go, the top is a photo of the capitol rotunda, the second is from the Newseum’s Pulitzer gallery. It is a quote from the late Eddie Adams, an incredible man who I wish I had the chance to know. The last is an image from a gallery about cartoons and their role in newspapers.
