Every year Libby and I send out a self-designed holiday card using our own skills as graphic artists and photographers. When it came time to produce this year’s card we had some initial trouble coming up with a fresh idea. After a bit of thinking I came up with the idea of using images taken specifically with my iPhone.

We whittled down hundreds of images from 5 continents and numerous events down to 70 colorful images that all appear on the front of the card. I wanted the thumbnails on the front of the card to be large enough to be readable to the viewer, yet small enough to maintain the graphic element of the grid. After putting the design together, we were both pleased with the initial outcome, but wanted to take it a step further. I decided to create the online aspect to supplement the physical card. IPHONEADVENTURE.COM is the manifestation of that.

Since all of the images that were chosen represent a significant moment or memory from 2009, we wanted this project to go beyond just a tiny thumbnail, and to explain itself, in context.

All 70 images from the physical card, are viewable in a larger, un-cropped format on the website. In addition, each image is accompanied by the date the image was made, the GPS coordinates corresponding to where the image was taken as well as a short and candid description of the image. Since the iPhone automatically embeds GPS location data into each photo taken with the device you will be able to see exactly where we were when we took the image via Google Maps. Clicking on the coordinates in each image’s description will open up a new window with data about the location.

Happy Holidays to everyone. Please take a moment to visit our little end of year project, IPHONEADVENTURE.COM

(ps. the image above is also an iphone image!)

Today was a rather eventful day. I woke up early and knocked out a quick assignment for the Chronicle in Memorial Park then rushed back home to change and meet the Welling Films crew at Shawn’s. Our documentary, “The Messenger: 360 Days of Bolivar” was chosen as an official selection in the 2009 Boomtown Film & Music Festival and we honored to screen the movie today in the festival’s home base of Beaumont, Texas. We made the hour or so trek out from Houston and as soon as we arrived we participated in a director’s panel. After the panel, we quickly headed off to the wonderful Jefferson Theatre which is where the festival’s films were screened. Our AMC digs for the premiere were awesome, but this theater had some amazing character. It was built in 1927 and recently restored. We didn’t spend a lot of time in Beaumont, but with the little time we did have, I walked around a bit and captured some images on the studio’s Nikon D700. I shoot Canon, however, sometimes I pick up the studio’s Nikons for a change. The D700 has one thing my cameras don’t and that is the ability to shoot and multiple exposures in-camera. I absolutely love the feature so I had a little fun with it. I tried to meld the multiple exposure idea with the feel of Beaumont and the activities surrounding the festival. During the awards ceremony, we were presented with an award for Best Docu-Drama. Success!

I’ve been working on the set of the docu-drama The Messenger: 360 Days of Bolivar for months now. I am the associate producer and chief photographer, but since the crew is fairly small, we all take on many different tasks. We are currently in the process of putting together a few trailers for the project, which means filming and subsequently for me shooting stills, has ceased for the time being. Since my stills are being infused in the trailer and eventually movie, I have been editing them a lot over the past few weeks. The image above is one of my favorites thus far. Its moody and abstract. Its of Michael, one of the main subjects’ fishing vessels in Galveston Bay.

Saturday was a full day of UH spring football, Astros baseball (and Pence bobble head) and a get together at Kevin’s. What a week! As you can see from my last entry, last weekend was filled with parties and NCAA basketball. Monday I assisted Robert with an awesome shoot. Wednesday I was taking photos of Planet Funk as they filmed a show for Oprah in Houston. Wednesday we also worked in Bolivar filming part of our movie, The Messenger. Friday, on something of a whim, Shawn (the owner of Planet Funk, my friend and director of The Messenger) John (one of the producers of the film) and I hopped into a Shawn’s car and drove to Dallas. Apparently one of the characters’ dreams is to attend a Nascar event and there just happened to be one going on this weekend at Texas Motor Speedway in Dallas and we just had to document this happening. The car was packed to the brim with expensive still and video equipment and just like a bunch of high school girls, we set off, giggling and gossiping the whole way. When we pulled up at 11pm, the club at the bottom floor of our hotel, The W, was in full swing. The next day we set out for our Nascar adventure. I have photographed at a number of race tracks, but this was my first time at TMS and my first time at a Nascar event. Needless to say it was different. Not really my cup of tea. I’m more of a Le Mans or Grand Prix person. The crowd and following is sure intense and it is very different live. The first shot is a photo of John driving and pointing to something out the window as he drives. Shawn was lazy and tired so John stopped for a Starbucks kick in Ennis and was hopped up (ala Ricky Bobby’s kids) the rest of the way home. The second shot was taken to show the scope of the race’s loyal following. Too bad I didn’t have a proper media credential to nail more of those Days of Thunder-esque shots, but we still had a great time, and hey…I get paid for this!

What a weekend! Thursday I picked up my Astros season credential at Union Station (cant wait for the home opener) and headed then over to Reliant for my NCAA credentials. It was one post and one week or so ago that I was at Reliant and in that week the whole complex, mainly Reliant Stadium, was transformed from rodeo to march madness. The NCAA set up was excellent as far as facilities go. Good food, good accommodations and organized for us photographers, however the actual set-up of the raised floor and seating were kind of sketchy. Its a huge football stadium so transforming it to accommodate a basketball court is strange. It was a feat for sure and I commend those involved, however with the overall seats being so far away from the action and the team benches being off the court itself it just didn’t feel as intimate as it could have been at the Toyota Center. Regardless, my seat was awesome! I was about 5 feet to the right of one of the goals and about 5 more feet from the baseline, which made for some interesting captures. With the two Sweet Sixteen games on Friday and the Elite 8 regional championship on Sunday I was a bit nervous about my gear scenario. I had shot a limited amount of collegiate and pro basketball in the past so I wanted to make sure I was good to go as far as gear went and having a camera at CPS getting a shutter replaced did not help. When I arrived I met Mark Sutton from Nikon and he was so great to loan me a brand spankin new D3 (Nikon’s new full-frame wonder camera), a 14-24mm 2.8 N, a 70-200mm 2.8 VR and a 300mm 2.8VR. Everything was fresh out the plastic new and ready to roll. I shot the two games Friday without incident and Mark even gave me a battery charger so that I could use the gear for my shoots Saturday. I absolutely loved the camera. So many features that I wish I had on my N’s; retouching in camera, dual cf slots, bigger and more accurate screen and viewfinder, full frame, and the most important…the noise. You can crank that sucker to 3200 and the noise looks like my 800 ASA. The image above was taken with the D3 and the 14-24mm lens at Libby’s rollerskating birthday party at Funtime Skating Rink in Clear Lake City, Texas. Our friend Kevin was trying to catch a cupcake in his mouth and failed. Good fun.
