On Saturday I got the chance to cover the 2007 Fire Fighters Memorial in Memorial Park. Hundreds of firemen and women from all over the US and Canada came out to honor the 114 fire fighters that lost their lives last year. There was a ton of stuff going on from bag pipes and drums to motorcycles and ringing bells. It was great because there was a range of emotions; laughter and smiles while seeing old friends or remembering old ones and sorrow while the names of the 114 were being read and the flags handed out to their families.

I also took some audio gear out to the event and captured audio clips and made them into the multimedia piece you see aboveIt was a challenge to worry about audio as well as making good images, as it was a challenge hammering out the workflow of the audio editing and production of the piece itself. My process is getting smoother though, and I am proud of that. I had a lot to shoot, so much that it was a bit overwhelming. Although their was plenty of light, the mid-day sun produced a little harsher light than I was hoping for. One of the shots used in the piece is of Lt. Scott Kirschner of the Detroit FD. He was making a copy of a fallen friend’s name on the memorial wall. I liked it because the left portion not only frames it well, but gives you subtle insight into what the actual wall looks like. The expression on Scott is great as well. It ran today (9/16) lead on A1.
