One thousand apologies for the lack of updates. It’s very rare that I go a whole month without blogging. I hate these entries because so much has happened that it’s hard to remember everything to add into just one blog, but since updating my blog is on my to-do list, I’ll try.

I moved back home to Houston this past Monday. It was a tough 24 hour drive with a quick nap at a hotel in Roanoke, VA. The last month or so at Patuxent were busy busy. Not only was I busy with assignments for the paper, other things were keeping me busy as well. Knowingly moving back to Houston, I put a lot on my plate as far as getting things in order to jump back into the freelance market in Houston, such as self-promotion, contacting editors and such. I got some neat new business cards made as well as a batch of 4×6 promo cards. A few of my coworkers and I drove down to Atlanta and attended the Atlanta Photojournalism Conference. I met a lot of awesome people and had a grand time.

Right before leaving for Atlanta I received my new Canon 5D mark II body. I absolutely love it so far. I’ve done a ton of short mess around clips, shot a few assignments with it and shot a short little mockumentary project with The Firm in Baltimore. I’m still in the editing process of that piece so stay tuned. I’m going to miss all my newly found friends in Baltimore.

I am loving it so far being back home. It’s something about moving back home during the holiday season that makes it extra special. Tuesday was my birthday and about 12 friends and I went to the Rockets game and out for late night food. I am visiting all of my favorite local food joints and even doing a few assignments already for the Chronicle. In fact a shot from an assignment yesterday (see above inset image) ran A-1 main art today!

l’ll admit here that I know OF the sport of cross country, but really have not shot it until coming up here to PPC. I shot one quick race for the first time a few weeks ago that was a little hairy as I did not know how everything was set up. Its also pretty tough for PPC in that we publish 20 different papers in a HUGE coverage area so you have to know every school and all of the all-stars to really get what the editors are looking for. Cross-country meets are always huge deals with several different high schools so it’s always a challenge. I have a cousin out in California who is all about it, but running to a point where you’re almost near-death is pretty ridiculous to me, but props to these kids.

I had an assignment to cover the Maryland State Cross Country Championships on Saturday and it was a challenge, but I think I came out pretty good. I pushed myself, shot a lot of variety, and even tried out some odd remotes that I would usually not have the time to set up. I was getting pretty close to some of the racers after they ran and a few high school kids pleaded for me to “give them privacy” etc, but I knew I was doing my job and that was confirmed when I felt a pat on my back and a “don’t worry about those kids, you’re just doing your job” from an older, wiser shooter. Besides having to park on a sketchy flattened corn field, it was a good day.

**UPDATE**

The series of images shot at the cross-country meet won 1st place in the multiple category during Region 8′s National Press Photographer’s Association monthly clip contest.
Its been a while since I’ve posted on this (primary) blog. My music reviews/photos have re-spawned into a new blog called http://whatdoyoumeanimnotonthelist.blogspot.com and given the frequency of live music I’ve witnessed in the past few weeks, that blog has seen more action. It’s mostly a me thing, but hey if I can serve a purpose with it I’m flattered. In all honesty, things have been hectic here. I was offered a staff photo position with PPC and in the end I respectfully declined the offer. I don’t think I’m crazy and I really hope I don’t end up regretting the decision, but I think it was for the best. While I do think a staff photo position would be great at this point in my career / life and while I do think PPC is a great place to start out, the industry and economy is in a tough spot and the offer would mean a significant pay cut with a significant increase in the cost of living, since Houston is an extremely inexpensive place to live with the Baltimore / DC area on the other end of the spectrum. PPC has its ups and downs as does any newspaper or employer really, but as I head into my last month here I am coming to the realization that the feeling of coming (or going) home is going to be somewhat eclipsed by this sadness of leaving the incredible friends I’ve made up here. Math Roth, Drew Smith, Monica Lopposay, Patrick Smith, Nicole, et al. They are all excellent people and even better friends and I am going to miss the hell out of all of them. There are some amazing shooters in Houston that I work with and get advice from, but my Houston life is void of any photographers my age to really socialize and talk to on a level that I do with this group. Enough of the bittersweet symphony here.

Last week I shot an assignment at Laurel Park which is the second largest horse racing track behind Pimlico (of Preakness fame). It was to be a multimedia piece to supplement a story on the Maryland slots debate, which is a huge issue for the state of Maryland and everyone involved. They put me on the story because they wanted multimedia, but it presented itself as a challenge because it really was not an ideal multimedia story, as there are no slots yet, and the story is on opinions and opinions are hard to make into pictures. I did what I could and put a short piece together using a few of my stills I captured during the day and my quick and dirty audio interviews I did with the players. I limited my editing time on this to force myself into getting better with the workflow of producing a piece in a matter of hours. I think it came out decent. My goal is to keep learning new tricks and to be able to pop these suckers out quickly. I’ve also been spending a lot of time teaching myself more about Final Cut and learning the new CS4 suite, more specifically Flash.
I’m totally on a blogging spree today. Tonight my boy Stef aka P.O.S. came to town with Saosin and Underoath and another hokey new metal band that all the kids like. Stef is a hip-hop artist and it’s always lovely to see him open for punk/metal acts. All of the 15-18 year old kids smashed against the barrier ready to “mosh” (don’t get me started on moshing in the 21st century) are completely perplexed when they hear rap. Either way it was a great show. Ram’s Head Live! was a very nice venue. Nice in the sense that I got in free and parked close, but something tells me it would have been a different story had I shelled out the $26 for a ticket. I’ll spare myself the trouble to going into a formal review here and just share one of my favorite images from the night. I met a few new photographers and even got a chance to hand out my new card!
Since the lady leaves tomorrow for Houston, we decided to pick up a few pumpkins at the Fells Point Safeway. I feel guilty buying them from Safeway given the fact that I’ve covered countless events at local farms that feature fresh pumpkin patches, but I like to think I just bought them from the retailer instead of the wholesaler. They are (hopefully) local, farm-fresh pumpkins! Either way we drug them up here to my temporary 3rd floor room and carved away. We had visions of elaborate designs, but in the end decided on a simpler theme. She usually beats me as far as speed and overall design goes, but I may have her this year (don’t tell her that) We had a grand old time. I slapped the trusty G9 on the 1 second time-lapse setting and let it fly during the process. The following video is the result. Nothing too crazy, just a little view into the event, complete with a cameo by my old Persian cat, TT, who awoke from his perpetual slumber and dawned his curiosity cap.
Yesterday’s 7am assignment was definitely one of my most interesting yet. I was sent out to Hydes, Maryland which is situated deep in the northern Maryland hills, making the drive exciting on its own. Boorny Vineyards, a local winery, was in the middle of a harvest and I was to make some images for a story. I have been to several vineyards here in the States as well as in France when I lived there, but did not think there were any this close. Boorny is a beautiful place and the grapes are sweet! Phineas (see image), the son of the owner, was extremely helpful and let me roam around and try the pinot gris (grigio) grapes right off the vine. I don’t drink so I cant comment on the actual finished product, but judging from other factors, its wonderful! The morning sun really helped bring lift these photos up a bit. I also spent my days off in Philly so stay tuned for a small essay I’m working on from that short trip.
It’s about lunch time here in Maryland and I have a bit of time before shooting my first girls field hockey game. I’ve shot a ton of different sports, but never this one so we’ll see how that goes. I purchased this vintage Polaroid Colorpack III that was brand new and still in the box for two bucks, a week or so back, at a small fair in rural Maryland and I’ve finally been able to put it to some use. The camera was originally marketed as one of the first color instant consumer cameras so there aren’t a lot of manual controls at all. The receipt was still folded neatly in the box when I opened it up. It was purchased locally in 1970 for about $50. Polaroid has since discontinued the production of their pack film so the film which used to be readily available (and fairly inexpensive) at local drug stores is now hard to find and sold at a premium. Who knows how long the availability will be for this type of film. With that in mind I am trying my best to take it with me on assignments (it’s plastic and pretty fragile) and am going to try to consciously look for places or people that lend themselves to this medium. This image shows a few of my first polaroids with the camera, pinned up in our newsroom photo department. The top is a field of dead corn in Marriottsville, Maryland and the bottom was taken in Centennial Park in Ellicott City, Maryland of a bride-to-be getting bridal portraits done.
The past few days have been decent I suppose. I’ve done a number of high school sporting events lately and a ton of other stuff as well. Last night I was up for the better (and worst) part of the night monitoring the situation with Hurricane Ike and Houston from here in Baltimore. How amazing is this Internet we have? I was able to simultaneously stream all 4 major Houston news outlets’ coverage in real time throughout the night. Things got really hairy down there and there was a lot of devastation and damage done, but my home in Clear Lake was spared and did not even lose power. On the flip-side, I was born on Galveston Island so it was pretty tough seeing all of the destruction out there. A lot of childhood memories destroyed. I hope everything gets worked out for them soon. My journalistic side really wanted to be out there in the middle of everything making images, but things don’t always work out that way. Instead, today, I photographed a neighborhood ice cream party and some soccer. I went into the first assignment picturing tons of kids with ice cream, but I was disappointed to find only a few people there. After spending some time with the families and people at the event I began to understand that I shouldn’t let the feeling of disappointment creep until before I step foot into the assignment. The people in this community and most that I have met out here are all so great. They offered me drinks, food, TV, ice cream, and just about everything else under the sun and their excuse was, “we are mothers, we make sure you’re taken care of.” Good stuff. The above image is from a muddy soccer game I photographed yesterday evening. I think I’ve been consistent in the past few days, making images that are solid and good, everyday work, but I really have yet to get anything super stellar that I really feel solid about. I need to get out and exercise my personal vision more. Maybe the Colorpack will hold the answer? Who knows.
My off days this week were not especially entertaining. I was originally planning on catching a game at Camden Yards here in Baltimore (since I’m only living a few blocks away) on Tuesday, but the weather was bad so I ended up going yesterday. I headed out early enough to coincidentally catch co-worker Justin Condor leaving the park from a shoot for USA Today. After we chatted for a bit I went inside and roamed around for a while. Camden has a lot of history in the MLB and in Baltimore and I was excited to visit and catch a game since I have been absent from MLB for a while now and I really miss baseball in person and on TV. My iphone has an app called AOL radio where I can stream select radio stations from anywhere in the country. The only drawback is that 740am which is the broadcaster of the Astros games isn’t on the list of channels for Houston, however 610am is which is Houston’s other good sports am channel. Its pretty awesome to be driving down a freeway in Maryland and hear Houston traffic updates. Makes me feel at home and homesick at the same time. Regardless, while I had some good light I made some images. The photo above is a neat scene I saw while walking through the outfield promenade between the park and the old B&O Warehouse which is such a iconic figure for the city and the ballpark. I just thought the light and shadows created some neat shapes. To all my Houston friends and family, stay safe! I hope Hurricane Ike turns into Hurricane Sike and heads east.
Today was definitely a lot better than yesterday’s storm flop. My first assignment to cover a tractor and steam engine festival way out in Westminster went off without a hitch. It was a gorgeous day in Maryland and the festival was a bit overwhelming, but I think I made some nice images. This was another event that forwarded my beliefs that Texas is NOT the most “country” (for lack of a more PC word) state in the Union. Texas has this sort of cowboy stereotype, but in Houston I live in an urban area and drive a car, not a horse. With that said, this was probably one of the most “country” events I’ve ever had the pleasure of attending. It was pretty awesome. There were a ton of great fair food vendors, tractor pulls and an incredibility random yet amazing swap meet where locals were selling everything from knives and tools to Beanie Babies and Nintendos. As an aside, I spent a total of $4.75 on 4 Newsweek magazine’s from 1970 in great condition, a Nolan Ryan Cooperstown Commemorative beanie baby-esque stuffed animal, a brand new in box Polaroid Colorpack III land camera with film and everything, and a few other nice items. When I wasn’t shopping I recorded some short audio clips in an effort to put together a short Soundslide showcasing a few of my favorite snaps from the event.
