Today I got the chance to shoot the first Athlete of the Week sportrait (sports portrait for those not in the biz) for the Gazette’s special weekly highlight during the school year. The subject was Kory Harnell, a star golfer for Air Academy High School, which is situated on the Air Force Academy base. I wanted to shoot on location at a golf course so it worked out when he told me he worked at Eisenhower Golf Course on base. Since the sync cables for the portable batteries could not be found I was forced to find a location near an electrical outlet. We decided on a practice green that overlooked one of the holes. We replaced the short tee with a full sized one for aesthetics and had him doing some simple poses, nothing fancy. He was fairly quiet and reserved so doing anything too crazy would have been pushing it. Unfortunately a few clouds rolled into my background right as we started shooting, but on location, you make the best of the situation. I used two Dynalite heads, one with a Chimera medium box and the other with a 20 degree honeycomb grid spot. My shooting angle was very limited as there were lots of obstructions that could have come into play, not to mention that my extension cords were stretched to the max. Overall I’m happy with the end result and even though there are things that I wish would have turned out differently, I think it’ll look good. We shall see when it runs on Tuesday.
